Welcome to Werms.Inc and we are excited to have you onboard as we embark on our journey towards a more transparent, less wasteful agri-food supply chain.
Dear Fellow Farmers,
As we all know, agriculture is one of the oldest industries with the first evidence of trial plant cultivation found in the Middle East 23,000 years ago. Despite being one of the oldest, agriculture is also one of the last industries to digitise and we are far from perfect. Agriculture is one of the single largest contributors to global warming. Emitting more greenhouse gas than vehicles, trains, and planes, combined. Largely due to the methane released by livestock, slash & burn deforestation, and nitrous oxide of fertilised fields. It is also a major consumer of water resource, disrupting ecosystems and accelerating the loss of biodiversity.
With the world population expected to exceed 9 billion in 2050, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that the world needs to increase its current food production by 70% to meet global nutritional demands. Today, the agri-food supply chain is highly inefficient and fragmented. Overexploiting resources without maximising harvest potential, meeting the increased demand through traditional means would be detrimental. 1/3 of all food produced (Est. 1.3 billion tons) are wasted annually with 90% of food waste lost even before it reaches the consumer while nearly a billion of the world’s population go hungry every day.
Despite its flaws, we believe that the agriculture industry remains a trillion-dollar opportunity for innovation and change. Due to our advantageous geographic location, we positioned Werms.Inc at the bedrock of the agri-food supply chain. Agricultural feed; in specific, aquafeed. According to a 2019 Global Aquaculture report by Marketline, Asia-Pacific (APAC) accounts for 84.3% of the global aquaculture industry value. Yet, feed supply is a major challenge faced by APAC’s aquaculture industry.
In creating our novel aquafeed, we have built a circular economy through upcycling and harnessing the power of nature. By keeping production, manufacturing, and distribution in-house, we effectively centralised the local aquafeed supply chain. Offering farmers, a cost-effective and convenient solution to diversify their source of aquafeed in an environmentally responsible manner. During uncertain times like the ongoing Covid19 epidemic where traditional supply chains are disrupted, diversifying supply is crucial in terms of business continuity.
Feed materials are harvested once a year in certain localities where 30% of food-grade crops are fed to livestock. On the other hand, insects can be farmed anywhere in the world with no seasonality nor at the mercy of natural disasters and unpredictable weather. Providing a sustainable source of high-quality protein throughout the year. As insects are cold-blooded, they can efficiently upcycle low-value biomass into high-quality protein and leave a tiny ecological footprint as compared to other livestock or crops. The same hectare of land that produces a metric ton of soy annually has been estimated to produce 150 tons of insect protein.
We create different materials for its properties from organic matter that breaks off from nature’s loop. For example, we make glass from sand, tyres from rubber sap and plastic from crude oil. Glass can never become sand again and that 1.6 million plastic bags that just got disposed of in the time you took to read this sentence will remain as plastic for the next millennium. Insects have been the natural food of wild juvenile fishes and we plan to make it the protein of the future. Join us in our novel aquafeed journey as we tie up loose ends and close a loop in the aquafeed supply chain.
